Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS Update - Android OS Tips and Tricks

Just like with your computer at home, the Android OS is always being improved upon and patched so that it can offer more features and fix security holes. If you run Windows at home I'm sure that you have had to do many Windows Updates over the years. The Android OS updates can be thought of the same type of thing as service packs for Windows.
The next major release of the Android OS after Froyo is the 2.3 Gingerbread update (as of this writing). This update is not as extensive of an update as Froyo was but still has some nice features. Not all Android phones will be getting this update but many new models will be released with Gingerbread pre-installed. The Google Nexus S is the first smartphone to come with the 2.3 OS pre-installed.
One thing you will notice is the slightly different looking interface. Gingerbread has the same feel but now everything is “blacked out” looking with darker colors and backgrounds. The launcher icons have been changed to a more greenish color as well.  This is all meant to make the interface easier to use. Plus there are a few new live wallpapers to choose from as well as support for multiple cameras.
2.3 Gingerbread
Improved Keyboard
The Android keyboard has been redesigned and for faster typing and editing. The keys have been reshaped and spread father apart, making it easier to type accurately. The dictionary suggestions are also easier to read. A new multi-touch system allows you to quickly enter numbers and symbols by tapping Shift+<letter> and ?123+<symbol>, without needing to switch input modes beforehand. Selecting text to cut copy or paste is also made easier with the use of two arrows used to help you select text. There is also a one touch word selection and copy and paste features. And if you long press a letter, all the accented versions of a letter will appear above it making it easy for you to choose the one you want.
Improved power management
Gingerbread gives you a better idea of what apps are running in the background and how much memory and CPU time they are using. It also provides details on usage and power consumed by each component or app. There is also an option that allows you to kill apps that are not working correctly. This power management feature helps to ensure the best possible performance and longer battery life.
Internet calling
Now you are able to make SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) voice calls over the internet to other users who have SIP accounts. You can also add a SIP address to a contact and use that to make calls directly from your contacts just like with a regular phone number. You can even make call shortcuts pointing to that SIP address. To use this feature you must have an account with a SIP provider.
Downloads management
The Downloads management application gives you access to any file downloaded from your email, web browser, or another app all from one place. Downloads are controlled by an entirely new download manager facility within the OS that any of your applications can use which makes it much easier to manage and store your downloads. This allows you to reopen or delete downloaded files from a single location.
Application Control
The 2.3 OS now has a shortcut called “Manage Applications” which you can get to from your options menu. From here, you can view all of your applications, see how much power they are using, and be able to stop any app on the spot.
2.3 Gingerbread
NFC (Near Field Communication)
NFC is the future of credit card commerce on mobile devices. You would use this to touch or swipe NFC tag embedded flyers, coupons or other advertisements to be directed to a websites, send and receive money, pay at cash terminals or use as an employee ID for access to office buildings using your Android device. This technology is still a work in progress so don’t expect to see anything too exciting right off the bat.
Access to motion sensors
There is now support for the 6 axis gyroscope for Nintendo's MotionPlus controller called InvenSense and there should be support the newest 9 axis gyroscope as well giving your precise measurements of linear acceleration and gravity on your Android phone. This comes in handy for games too of course.
Multimedia improvements
Gingerbread offers improved support for 3rd party video drivers which are generally used for 3D graphics acceleration. Other improvements include minimized application pauses resulting in smoother animations, and increased performance in games. Touch and keyboard events are also recognized faster while reducing CPU load.

Brings Android Apps / Games To Your Windows PC

BlueStacks, the Android runtime development environment, has just signed a partnership with Critix and received a funding of $7.6m which could now help to turn the company into a variable business.

BlueStacks was firstly demonstrated in public just this week at the Citrix Synergy conference. BlueStack-Citrix partnership allows the Critix reciever to deliver the software which showing just one of the ways of how BlueStacks could be practically used other than being just another cool Android development tool.
BlueStacks seem to be even more exciting as it is capable of replacing the current Android emulation that is compulsarily used by the developers to test their apps inside Windows. The current emulation methods cause their own inherent problems, such as degraded performance. But these problems would no longer exist by the use of BlueStacks.
Running Android software on a Windows PC involves emulation—which affects on its performance and causes to resource overhead- which is known to most of the Android app developers. BlueStacks comes with a native x86 Android runtime which doesn’t depend on emulation. This helps to overcome the performance barrier. The company has also said that any of the Android applications running on its stack will have high performance on Windows and will be free from any kind of problems faced while using Google’s emulator.
BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma said in an interview that, the software developers working on the project have been working very carefully to make the stack as seamless as possible for the smooth operating of Android apps making it feel just like native Windows software when being used. The whole system also comes with an additional advantage, which is that any of the Android apps coded for the operating system’s native APIs do not require any re-writing, eliminating another barrier for developers.
Sharma further says that the day is not far when one day mobile devices such as convertible notebook computers could come pre-loaded with both Windows, and Android applications, this possibility occurs when the machine is converted into a tablet.
BlueStacks could make an impact in the on-going fight for mobile supremacy with this interesting new twist to the fight, bringing Android’s apps to the world of Windows.

Sony Ericsson unveils three new smartphones, Xperia Ray preview

Sony Ericsson has unveiled three new smartphones with some incredible features. The three smartphones are named as  Xperia Ray, Xperia Active and Sony Ericsson TXT. Xperia Ray and Xperia Active are powered by Android 2.3 while the TXT is a featured phone.
Over the past few months the mobile phone manufacturers has seen their market share dropped a little but now it seems they are serious back in the race with release of some of the wonderful handsets.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray more or less looks like Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as far as  shape and form factor is concerned. And the design looks to be somewhat inspired by Xperia Arc. But the menu buttons are redesigned and thinner (9.44 mm) than X10 .Xperia ray has Android 2.3 Gingerbread and comes with Sony Ericsson’s Timescape. The phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor with the Adreno 205 GPU. Applications and games will be well supported by this device. Likewise it sports capacitive 3.3-inch scratch-resistant display with resolution of 854 x 480 pixels (FWVGA). Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine make videos look wonderful with the pixel density of the display 297ppi.
The device comes with an 8.1 camera with an aperture of F2.4 and front VGA camera as well. The  shutter speeds is faster than the previous versions that makes you take better shots.
Since we do not know the exact date of its launch, there may be many smartphones with faster hardware before this promising device hits the market.
The Ray may cost you $475 with a few suggestions of being released in the third quarter of 2011.

How to save battery life in Samsung Galaxy S2?

The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the Android phone with 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display which beats for sheer power. Performance comes at a price. Here’s some tips on how you can maximise your Galaxy S 2′s battery life.
Manage screen brightness
Super AMOLED Plus display is the major source of battery drain on your Galaxy S 2, so it is obvious that we should reduce its impact. If you want some serious power-saving then just deactivate the auto-brightness feature in the Settings menu and decrease the brightness slider right down.
If you are not that agressive but you want to save some power, make sure that you download the latest Galaxy S 2 software update through Kies which helps to stabilise the auto-adjust effect and thus save you a bit of power.
Keep the backgrounds simple
You might wanna use those beautiful live wallpapers, eh? Don’t…They surely drain a lot of power, requiring constant additional level of processing oomph to display.
For power saving measure, We’d recommend you to go for a pretty plain background, and if you want to get serious about you battery power go for a dark one. Because AMOLED screens are very efficient when it comes to rendering blacks as lots of vibrant colours start to get thrown around that the strain on the battery starts to show.
Use the pre-loaded Task Manager to kill background apps
The multi-tasking ability of Android is beneficial in many ways, but its as worse as leaving the telly and lights on in the other room which is definately a unnecessary and power-hungry luxury. Go to the Galaxy S 2 Task Manager from time to time and you might be surprised at what’s still running. You would have required a special app, like ATK, if you wished to kill such background apps, but the original Task Manager of your phone also allows you to end those resource-sapping apps. Running on the Galaxy S 2′s dual-core processor, it won’t take be long to boot them up again whenever you wish. The phone can even be configured to take care of some of this automatically through its Power Saving Mode, which can be configured to kick in when your battery drops to a certain percentage.
Limit network access
Another rather unnecessary process is how your Galaxy S connects to networks – whether through Wi-Fi or 3G. You can simply save power here by turning Wi-Fi off when not needed. You can also reduce the frequency with which your Galaxy S 2 auto-syncs to pull in your email. If you’re not waiting on anything urgent, the auto-sync could also be turned off to save some power and you can choose to manually sync whenever you feel like it.
If you only need your phone for traditional voice calls and text messages, another way of saving power could be to use 2G by selecting ‘GSM only’ in the Network mode menu. This will make your phone use 2G only rather than switching between 2G and 3G according to availability.
Charge properly
Some of you might think that there is a particular technique to plugging your Galaxy S 2 in to charge, but yes you are right. However, some attention should be paid while you charge. If you constantly keep on topping up your phone’s battery whenever you get the chance, your battery will definately stay full but seriously its not any favours to your phone.Particularly early on in the phone’s life, it will require some self training to establish its capacity. And for that you should run the power of phone completely down early on, and occasionally thereafter. Obviously this is not practical all the time, but you might wanna consider as the part of your phone maintenance and let it tire itself out from time to time.
It’s somewhat like walking a dog, really.

Tethering apps ‘blocked’ in Android Market

State’s some of the biggest wireless carriers are trying to put kibosh as a free app, which is gonna enable Google Android users to use their smartphones as modems without having to pay any of the carriers’ extra fee.
Reports from the several blogs in recent days have suggested that Android phone tethering apps which are available in the Android Market are not available for Android phones on AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile USA.
Sprint customers, however, still have access to many of these tethering apps from the Android Market.
Reports first surfaced from the blog DroidLife that AT&T and Verizon Wireless handsets were unable to download the free tethering app Wireless Tether. AT&T and Verizon representatives refused to make any comments, and said that availability of the apps in the Android Market are decided by Google. It is yet unknown if Google removed the Wireless Tether app or any other free tethering app from the Android Market on the companies’ requests.
A spokesman from google disclosed no any apps were being  blocked. Instead the apps were simply made unavailable for download on certain carrier networks at the request of those carriers. A carrier can request the google to make the app unavailable if the application is directly violates the terms and conditions of a usage contract, the spokesman further told.
